then make peace between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, fight the transgressing group until it returns to Allah’s command. If it returns, make peace between them with justice and act equitably. Surely Allah loves those who act equitably.” Thus, He called them (1) believing brothers despite the fighting and transgression that occurred.

In the two Sahih collections, it is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“A seceding faction will emerge at a time of division among the Muslims. The one of the two parties nearer to the truth will kill them.” (2)

These secessionists rebelled against Ali, which indicates that his party was nearer to the truth than Muāwiya’s party.

In the Sahih, it is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“This son of mine is a leader, and through him Allah will reconcile two great groups of believers.” (3)

Through him, Allah reconciled Ali’s supporters and Muāwiya’s supporters. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) thus praised al-Hasan for reconciling the two parties and called them believers. This indicates that reconciling them was praiseworthy. Had fighting been obligatory or recommended, abandoning it would not have been praiseworthy.

It is also related that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“There will be a tribulation in which the one sitting is better than the one standing, the one standing is better than the one walking, and the one walking is better than the one hastening toward it. Whoever exposes himself to it will be engulfed by it, and whoever finds a refuge from it should seek shelter there.”

Both compilers included it in the two Sahih collections (4).

In the two Sahih collections, it is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
