“But whoever opens his heart to disbelief—upon them is wrath from Allah, and they will suffer a tremendous punishment.”
Moreover, “Abd Allah ibn Umar narrated, saying: ‘I came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and heard him say, “A man will appear before you who will die upon a path other than my sunnah.” Then Muāwiya appeared. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—stood to deliver a sermon (1), but Muāwiya took his son Yazīd by the hand, left, and did not listen to the sermon. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then said, “May Allah curse the one leading and the one being led! What sort of day will the ummah (2) have with Muāwiya, the evildoer?”’ Muāwiya went to extremes in waging war against Ali—peace be upon him—killed a great many of the finest Companions, and cursed him from the pulpits (3). This reviling continued for eighty years (4), until Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz put an end to it. He poisoned al-Hasan [peace be upon him] (5); his son Yazīd killed our master al-Husayn (6) and seized his womenfolk as spoils; Muāwiya’s father (7) broke one of the Prophet’s—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—incisors (8); and his mother ate the liver of Hamza, the Prophet’s paternal uncle—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—” (9).
