Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

The hadith is established as an authentic report from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—according to hadith scholars (1). Those who killed him were the ones who directly carried out his killing. The hadith employs the term al-baghy (transgression) without qualification; it does not qualify it with an object, as Allah Most High says:

“They will not desire any change from it” — Sūrat al-Kahf.

Likewise, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Those among you who are mere followers, seeking neither family nor wealth” (2).

When the term al-baghy is used without qualification, it means injustice, as Allah Most High says:

((3)) Sūrat al-Hujurāt.

And He says:

((4)) Sūrat al-Baqara.

(1) The hadith is recorded in *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 5/333 (*Book of Virtues*, “Chapter on the Virtues of Ammār ibn Yāsir”), on the authority of Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—with the wording: “Rejoice, Ammār, for the rebellious faction will kill you.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “Reports on this subject have also been narrated from Umm Salama, Abd Allāh ibn Amr, Abū al-Yusr, and Hudhayfa. This is a sound, authentic, but uncommon hadith through the narration of al-Alā’ ibn Abd al-Rahmān.” Al-Albānī also graded the hadith authentic in *Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīha*, 2/269, no. 710, where he discussed its chains and variant wordings. The hadith is also recorded in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.) from Abū Saīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—3/5, 22, 28, 90–91, and 5/306–307; from Khuzayma ibn Thābit—may Allah be pleased with him—5/214–215; and from Umm Salama—may Allah be pleased with her—6/289–290, 300, 311, and 315. Al-Albānī also cited its locations in Ibn Sad’s *al-Tabaqāt*, Abū Nuaym’s *al-Hilya*, al-Hākim’s *al-Mustadrak*, and al-Khatīb’s *Tārīkh*. (2) This is part of a hadith narrated by Muslim in his *Sahīh* from Iyād ibn Himār al-Mujāshiī—may Allah be pleased with him—4/2197–2199 (*Book of Paradise, Its Bliss and Its Inhabitants*, “Chapter on the Characteristics by Which the Inhabitants of Paradise and Hell May Be Recognized in This World”). Its wording is: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said one day during his sermon: “Behold, my Lord has commanded me to teach you what you do not know of that which He has taught me this day. Any wealth that I have bestowed upon a servant is lawful, and I created all My servants as *hunafā’* (inclined to pure monotheism)…” The hadith continues, and includes: “…The inhabitants of Hell are five: the weak who have no restraint—those among you who are mere followers and seek neither family nor wealth…” The hadith continues. Muslim also cited another chain containing the wording: “They are among you as followers, seeking neither family nor wealth.” The phrase “who has no restraint” means that he has no reason to restrain and prevent him from doing what is improper. (3) “If one of them transgresses against the other, then fight the one that transgresses.” (4) “But whoever is compelled by necessity, neither desiring it nor exceeding the limit.”
