Abū Saīd from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—but rather other Companions, such as Abū Qatāda (1), had related it to him, as Muslim narrated in his Sahih (2), through Shuba, from Abū Nadra, from Abū Saīd (3). He said:
“Someone better than I—Abū Qatāda (4)—informed me that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to Ammār:
‘The rebellious faction will kill you.’”
In the narration of Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from Abū Nadra, from Abū Saīd, Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“A faction will break away, and the one of the two parties closest to Allah will kill them.” (5)
Ammār used to carry bricks two at a time. He said:
“I did not hear it from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—but I came to my companions and found them saying that Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had said:
‘Alas for you, son of Sumayya! The rebellious faction will kill you.’” (6)
Muslim narrated it
(1) See al-Bayhaqī, *al-Sunan al-Kubrā*, 8/189. I could not locate the exact text of Ibn Taymiyya’s statement.
(2) The hadith is in Muslim, 4/2235–2236 (*Book of Tribulations*, chapter “The Hour Will Not Come until a Man Passes by Another Man’s Grave…”).
(3) Muslim, 4/2235, reads: “Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā and Ibn Bashshār narrated to us—the wording is that of Ibn al-Muthannā—both of whom said: Muhammad ibn Jafar narrated to us: Shuba narrated to us, from Abū Maslama, who said: I heard Abū Nadra narrating from Abū Saīd al-Khudrī…”
(4) The words “Abū Qatāda” do not occur in hadith no. 70 of the chapter, but they do occur in the following hadith, no. 71.
(5) This hadith appeared previously at 1/306. This version is in Muslim, where its chain of transmission at 2/746 reads: “Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us: Abd al-Alā narrated to us: Dāwūd narrated to us, from Abū Nadra, from Abū Saīd al-Khudrī, that Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: ‘A seceding faction will emerge amid a division among the people, and whichever of the two parties is closer to the truth will undertake to kill them.’”
(6) This is not Muslim’s wording. Rather, hadith no. 70 there reads: “How unfortunate for the son of Sumayya! A rebellious faction will kill you.” Hadith no. 71 contains similar wording, but reads: “Alas for the son of Sumayya!”—or, as he says, “Oh, alas for the son of Sumayya!” I found the hadith with approximately this chain of transmission and wording in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 2/5.
