and grant him peace—was violated.” Yet they make an outcry and allege that one of the Syrians sought to enslave (1) Fātima bint al-Husayn, and that she said:

“No, by Allah (2)—not unless you renounce (3) our religion.”

If this did occur, then those who asked Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—to take captive (4) those who had fought them at the Battles of the Camel and Siffīn, and to seize their property as spoils, committed a graver crime than these men (5). Had they taken captives, this would have included Aisha and others.

Moreover, those who made this demand of Ali regarded it as part of their religion and persisted in it until they rebelled against Ali, whereupon he fought them over it. By contrast, the person who sought to enslave Fātima bint al-Husayn was one (6) unknown man who had neither power nor proof. Nor did he seek this out of religious conviction; when his ruler forbade him to do it, he desisted. Thus, (7) those in Ali’s army who deemed lawful the blood of the believers (8), their womenfolk and property, and the sanctity of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—were worse than their counterparts among Banū Umayya. This is a matter upon which people agree, for the Kharijites who broke away from Ali’s army—may Allah be pleased with him—were worse than the worst elements of Muāwiya’s army—may Allah be pleased with him. This is why the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—commanded that they be fought, and the Companions and scholars unanimously agreed that they should be fought.

The Rafidites are more mendacious, unjust, and ignorant than they are, and closer to unbelief and hypocrisy, [but they] are more powerless (9) and abased. Both groups came from Ali’s army. And through this

(1) A and B read: “steal”; this is a textual corruption. (2) A, N, M, and W read: *lāha Allāh*; R and H: *lā hā Allāh*. (3) B alone reads: “then he disbelieved.” (4) A and B read: “that they take captives.” (5) The phrase “than these men” is absent from B, while the word “and these” is absent from A. (6) N and M read: “a man.” (7) N, M, and S read: “and were.” (8) A and B read: “the Muslims.” (9) N and M read: “and hypocrisy, and more powerless.”
