Aws (1), we will strike off his head; but if he is one of our brothers from the Khazraj (2), command us, and we will do with him as you command.”
Saʿd ibn ʿUbāda then stood and said, “By Allah, you lie! You will not kill him, nor are you capable of killing him.” Usayd ibn Hudayr then arose and said, “By Allah, you lie! We shall certainly kill him, for you are a hypocrite defending the hypocrites.” Strife nearly erupted between the Aws and the Khazraj, until the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—came down and calmed them. These three were among the finest of the earliest and foremost believers. Yet Usayd ibn Hudayr said to Saʿd ibn ʿUbāda, “You are a hypocrite defending the hypocrites.” This man was a believer, an ally of Allah, and one of the people of Paradise; and the other was likewise a believer, an ally of Allah (4), and one of the people of Paradise. This demonstrates that a man may, on the basis of interpretation, declare another man (5) an unbeliever, while neither of them is an unbeliever.
