and hers (1).

She—may Allah be pleased with her—was a source of blessing to his ummah. Thus, when Allah revealed the verse concerning dry ablution because of her, Usayd ibn Hudayr said, “This is not the first blessing you have brought, O family of Abu Bakr. No matter that you disliked ever befell you without Allah placing in it a blessing for the Muslims” (2).

(1) A and B read: “between her saliva and his.” The hadith is narrated from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—and is recorded in several places in al-Bukhārī, including 6/13 (*Book of Military Expeditions*, chapter “Muhammad ibn Ubayd Narrated to Me …”). It states that Aisha used to say: “Among Allah’s blessings upon me are that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—died in my house, on my allotted day, between my chest and throat, and that Allah joined my saliva with his at the time of his death …” The hadith is also recorded in Muslim 4/1893 (*Book of the Merits of the Companions*, chapter “On the Merit of Aisha”), where it reads: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—would inquire, ‘Where am I today? Where will I be tomorrow?’ impatient for Aisha’s day to come.” She said: “When my day came, Allah took him in death between my chest and throat.” The hadith is also recorded in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 6/48, 121–122, 200, 274. (2) The hadith is narrated from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—and is recorded in several places in al-Bukhārī, including 1/70 (*Book of Dry Ablution*, chapter “Allah Most High’s Statement: ‘If you find no water, then perform dry ablution with clean earth …’”). It begins: “We accompanied the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—on one of his journeys. When we reached al-Baydā or Dhāt al-Jaysh, a necklace of mine broke …” It also states: “Abu Bakr came while the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—was asleep with his head resting on my thigh. He said, ‘You have detained the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and the people where there is no water, and they have none with them.’” Aisha continued: “Abu Bakr reproached me and said whatever Allah willed him to say. He began jabbing me in the side with his hand, and nothing prevented me from moving except that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—was resting on my thigh. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—arose with no water available. Allah then revealed the verse of *tayammum* (dry ablution), and they performed dry ablution. Usayd ibn al-Hudayr said, ‘This is not the first blessing you have brought, O family of Abu Bakr …’” The hadith is also recorded in Muslim 1/279 (*Book of Menstruation*, chapter “Dry Ablution”); *Sunan al-Nasā’ī* 1/133 (*Book of Purification*, chapter “The Institution of Dry Ablution”); *al-Muwatta* 1/53–45 (*Book of Purification*, chapter “This Is a Chapter on Dry Ablution”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 6/179.
