Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Aisha was the one he loved most, the most knowledgeable among them (1), and the one held in greatest reverence by the Muslims.

It is established in the Sahih that people would deliberately present their gifts on Aisha’s day (2), knowing how much he loved (3) her. His wives became jealous on account of this and sent Fatimah—may Allah be pleased with her—to him, saying to him (4), “We ask you to deal justly (5) regarding the daughter of Abu Quhafah.”

He said to Fatimah, “My dear daughter, (6) do you love what I love?”

She replied, “Yes.”

He said, “Then love this woman.” This is part of a hadith recorded in both Sahih collections (7).

  • It is also recorded in both Sahih collections that the Prophet—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—said:

“O

(1) “And the most knowledgeable among them” is absent from N and M. (2) The hadith is narrated by Hishām ibn Urwa, from his father, from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—and is recorded in al-Bukhārī 5 (*Book of the Merits of the Prophet’s Companions …*, chapter “The Merit of Aisha …”). It begins: “People would deliberately time their gifts for Aisha’s day.” Aisha said: “My co-wives gathered with Umm Salama and said, ‘Umm Salama, by Allah, people are deliberate with their gifts regarding Aisha …’” The remainder of the hadith is also recorded in Muslim 4/1891 (*Book of the Merits of the Companions*, chapter “On the Merit of Aisha …”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī* 5/362–363 (*Book of Virtues*, chapter “On Some of Aisha’s Merits”); *Sunan al-Nasā’ī* 7/64 (*Book of the Treatment of Women*, chapter “A Man’s Loving Some of His Wives More Than Others”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 6/293. (3) A and B read: “his affection.” (4) A reads: “so they said to her”; B: “she should say to him.” (5) B alone reads: “Your wives ask you to deal justly.” (6) *Alā* (“do you not”); A and B read: *amā* (“do you not”). (7) A reads: “The hadith is the two Sahihs”; B: “The hadith is in the two Sahihs.” It forms part of a hadith narrated by Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—recorded in al-Bukhārī 3/156–157 (*Book of Gifts*, chapter “One Who Gives a Gift to His Companion and Selects One of His Wives over the Others”); Muslim 4/1891–1892 (*Book of the Merits of the Companions*, chapter “On the Merit of Aisha …”); *Sunan al-Nasā’ī* 7/62–63 (*Book of the Treatment of Women*, chapter “A Man’s Loving Some of His Wives More Than Others”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 6/88, 150–151.
