hypocrite.” (1)
In the authentic [hadith] (2) of Abū Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—supplicated for him and his mother, asking Allah to make them beloved to His believing servants. He said:
“You will not find a believer who does not love me and my mother.” (3)
This helps clarify the difference between this [hadith] and the hadith (4) reported (5) from Ibn Umar: “During the Prophet’s lifetime—peace and blessings be upon him—we recognized the hypocrites only by their hatred of Alī.” (6) Every scholar knows this to be false;
(1) The hadith narrated by al-Barā ibn Āzib—may Allah be pleased with him—is found in al-Bukhārī, 5/32 (*Book of the Virtues of the Ansār*, chapter “Love of the Ansār”); Muslim, 1/85 (*Book of Faith*, chapter “Evidence That Loving the Ansār…”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 5/371 (*Book of Virtues*, chapter “Some of the Virtues of the Ansār and Quraysh”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 4/283, as well as elsewhere in *al-Musnad*.
(2) The word *al-hadīth* is omitted from N and M.
(3) This is a lengthy hadith narrated by Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in which the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “O Allah, guide Abū Hurayra’s mother.” At its conclusion, he said: “O Allah, make this servant of Yours—meaning Abū Hurayra—and his mother beloved to Your believing servants, and make the believers beloved to them.” Thus, no believer has ever been created who hears of me without seeing me but loves me. The hadith is found in Muslim, 4/1938–1939 (*Book of the Virtues of the Companions*, chapter “Some of the Virtues of Abū Hurayra…”), and *al-Musnad* (al-Maārif ed.), 16/113–114.
(4) A and B read: “clarifies the difference between this hadith and the hadith…” N, M, and W read: “through it, the difference between this and the hadith is made clear.”
(5) S reads: “which narrated.” All other manuscripts read: “which he narrated.”
(6) The hadith narrated by Abū Saīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—is found in *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 5/298–299 (*Book of Virtues*, chapter “The Virtues of Alī…”). Its wording is: “Indeed, we, the Ansār, used to recognize the hypocrites by their hatred of Alī ibn Abī Tālib.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a *gharīb* (singularly transmitted) hadith. Shuba spoke critically of Abū Hārūn al-Abdī. It has also been narrated from al-Amash, from Abū Sālih, from Abū Saīd.” In al-Haythamī’s *Majma al-Zawāid*, 9/132–133, it states: “Jābir ibn Abd Allah said: ‘By Allah, during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—we recognized our hypocrites only by their hatred of Alī.’ Al-Tabarānī narrated it in *al-Awsat*. Al-Bazzār narrated a similar report, except that his wording is: ‘We, the Ansār, used to recognize our hypocrites [by their hatred of Alī].’ All of its chains of transmission are weak.” I have not found this hadith narrated from Ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with him.
