Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Abd Manāf, the clans of Quraysh, the Ansār, and the Arabs have to placate Usāma ibn Zayd, when he was among the weakest of their subjects, having neither tribe nor clan, nor [did he possess] (1) wealth or men? Were it not for the Prophet’s love for him (2)—peace and blessings be upon him—and the precedence he accorded him, he would have been merely one among other weak men like himself.

If you say:

“They both placated him (3) because the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—loved him,”

you yourselves claim that they altered his covenant, wronged his designated successor, and usurped his rights (4). Would someone who disobeyed an authentic command, altered a clear covenant, committed injustice and aggression, subdued others, paid no heed to obeying Allah and His Messenger, and showed no regard for either kinship or covenant concerning the family of Muhammad show consideration for someone like Usāma ibn Zayd and seek to placate him? Yet he rejected the testimony of Umm Ayman without placating her, and he angered and harmed Fātima, though she had a greater claim to being placated. What need would anyone who does (5) such things have (6) to placate Usāma ibn Zayd?

A person is placated only for religious or worldly reasons. If they had no religious commitment to impel them to placate those who ought to be placated, and had no worldly need of him, what motive would induce them to placate him? If they had no worldly need of him, what motive would induce them to placate him?

Because of their ignorance and lies, the Rāfidis fall into [many] (7) blatant contradictions, for they (8) are given to conflicting claims, from which whoever is turned away is turned away.

(1) “With him” is omitted from N and M. (2) A and B read: “for him.” (3) A and B read: “Indeed, he placated him,” which is erroneous. (4) N reads: “and they wronged his designated successor and sayyaghūhu”; M reads: “and they wronged his testament and sayyaghūhu”; A reads: “and they wronged his designated successor and provoked him to anger”; S reads: “and they wronged his testament and angered him.” (5) A and B read: “So whoever did.” (6) A reads: “What need does he have?”; B reads: “Then what need does he have?” (7) “Numerous” is omitted from N and M. (8) B alone reads: “or they.”
