and other Companions by way of aspersions is largely false, while in some cases they acted on an interpretation. Even if some of it amounted to sin, they were not infallible. Rather, despite being allies of Allah and among the people of Paradise, they committed sins that Allah forgave them.

Likewise, what he related—that she swore not to speak to him or his companion until she met her father and complained to him—is something unfitting to relate about Fātimah—may Allah be pleased with her—for complaints are to be made only to Allah Most High. As the righteous servant said:

“I complain of my anguish and sorrow only to Allah.”

[Surah Joseph: 86]

In the supplication of Moses—peace be upon him—it is said: “O Allah, to You belongs all praise; to You is the complaint; You are the One whose help is sought; from You relief is sought; and upon You is all reliance.”

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to Ibn Abbās:

“If you ask, ask Allah; and if you seek help, seek help from Allah.”

This hadith is narrated from Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, vol. 4 (Book of the Description of the Resurrection, chapter 22). Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a good and authentic hadith.” Its opening there reads: “Young man, I shall teach you some words: Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you...” and so on to the end of the hadith. It also appears in al-Musnad (al-Ma'arif ed.), 4/233, 269, 270, 286, 287. He did not say, “Ask me or seek my help.” (1)

Allah Most High also said:

“So when you have finished, exert yourself, and direct your longing to your Lord.”

[Surah al-Sharh: 7, 8]
