“Be patient until you meet me at the Pool.” (1)

He also said: “Indeed, my Pool extends farther than (2) the distance from Aylah to Aden. The first people to reach it will be the poor Emigrants, with disheveled hair and soiled clothes, who do not marry women accustomed to luxury and for whom doors (3) are not opened. One of them dies with his need still in his heart, unable to have it fulfilled.” Muslim and others narrated it (4).

Truth, however, is not one of the persons who come to the Pool. It has also been narrated [that he said] (5): “I am leaving among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my kindred, the people of my household, and they will never (6)

(1) The hadith is reported with this wording from Abd Allah ibn Zayd ibn Āsim, Usayd ibn Hudayr, al-Barā ibn Azib, and others—may Allah be pleased with them—in al-Bukhārī, 5/33 (Book of the Merits of the Ansār, chapter on the Prophet’s statement—peace and blessings be upon him—to the Ansār: “Remain patient until you meet me at the Cistern”); Muslim, 3/1474 (Book of Leadership, chapter on the command to remain patient in the face of rulers’ injustice and their appropriation of privileges); and al-Musnad (Halabī ed.), 3/57, 166, 171; 4/42, 292. (2) N, W, S: “from what.” (3) The word “doors” is omitted only from B. (4) I have not found a hadith with this wording. I did, however, find a hadith from Thawbān—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 4/47–48 (Book of the Description of the Resurrection, chapter on what has been narrated concerning the vessels of the Cistern). The hadith reads: “My Cistern extends from Aden to Amman in al-Balqā. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey, and its cups are as numerous as the stars in the sky. Whoever drinks from it once will never thirst again. The first people to reach it will be the poor among the Muhājirūn: their hair disheveled and their clothes soiled; they do not marry women accustomed to luxury, and doors are not opened to them.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “This hadith is gharīb (singularly transmitted) through this route. It has also been narrated from Madān ibn Abī Talha, from Thawbān, from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him.” As for Thawbān’s hadith concerning the Cistern in Muslim, 4/1799–1800 (Book of Virtues, chapter affirming the Cistern of our Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and its attributes), its wording differs from this hadith and agrees with it in only a few expressions. (5) The words “that he said” occur only in A and B. (6) A, B: “will never.”
