The Twelfth Aspect:
The words of Allah Most High,
“Solomon inherited David”
[Surah al-Naml: 16],
and His words [concerning Zechariah] (1),
“So grant me from Yourself a successor who will inherit from me and inherit from the family of Jacob”
[Surah Maryam: 5–6],
do not establish the point in dispute. Inheritance is a generic term encompassing various kinds, and a term denoting the common feature does not thereby denote the feature that distinguishes one kind from another.
Thus, if it is said, “This is an animal,” that does not indicate whether it is a human being, a horse, or a camel. This is because the term “inheritance” (2) is used for the inheritance of knowledge, prophethood, sovereignty, and other forms of succession.
Allah Most High says:
“Then We caused those of Our servants whom We chose to inherit the Book.”
[Surah Fatir: 32]
Allah Most High also says:
“Those are the inheritors who will inherit Paradise; they will abide therein forever.”
[Surah al-Mu’minun: 10–11]
Allah Most High also says:
“That is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit because of what you used to do.”
[Surah al-Zukhruf: 72]
Allah Most High also says:
“And He caused you to inherit their land, their homes, their wealth, and a land upon which you had never set foot.”
[Surah al-Ahzab: 27]
Allah Most High also says:
“Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah. He causes whomever He wills of His servants to inherit it, and the ultimate outcome belongs to those who fear Allah.”
[Surah al-A‘raf: 128]
Allah Most High also says:
“And We caused the people who had been oppressed to inherit the eastern and western regions of the land that We had blessed.”
[Surah al-A‘raf: 137]
