Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

As for his mention of Umar’s prohibition of temporary marriage with women, it is established from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that he prohibited temporary marriage [after it had been permitted] (1). This is how reliable narrators transmitted it in the two Sahih collections and elsewhere: from al-Zuhrī, from Abd Allāh and al-Hasan—the two sons of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya—from their father, Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, the following report: “Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—said to Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with him—[when Ibn Abbās permitted temporary marriage] (2): You are a man gone astray. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—prohibited temporary marriage and the flesh of domesticated donkeys (* [in the year of Khaybar].” (3) This was transmitted from al-Zuhrī—the most knowledgeable person of his time concerning the Sunnah and the one who had preserved it best—by the leading imams of Islam in their time, such as Mālik ibn Anas, Sufyān ibn Uyayna, and others whose knowledge, integrity, and precision Muslims (4) unanimously acknowledged. Nor have the hadith scholars differed over this being an authentic hadith, received (5) with acceptance. No scholar has impugned it. *) (6)

It is likewise established in the Sahih that he prohibited it (7) during the Campaign of the Conquest until the Day of Resurrection. The narrators of Ali’s hadith—may Allah be pleased with him—disagreed as to whether his words, “in the year of Khaybar,” indicate the date only of the prohibition of domesticated donkeys, or of both that prohibition and the prohibition of temporary marriage. The former is the view of Ibn Uyayna and others.

(1) “After it had been made lawful” is omitted from N, M, and W. (2) The passage between square brackets is omitted from N, M, and H. (3) “In the year of Khaybar” is omitted from N and M. (4) “The Muslims” is omitted from B. (5) B reads: “is received.” (6) The passage between the two asterisks is omitted from R, H, and S. (7) H, S, and R read: “that he prohibited both of them.”
