Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Another indication of their extreme ignorance and partisanship is that they take a speechless animal and abuse it without right, having made it represent someone they hate (1). Thus, they take a red ewe, name it Aisha, and pluck out its wool. They also take some of their animals, name some Abū Bakr and others Umar, and beat them without right. They fashion from hays an effigy of a man (2), make it represent Umar, and slit open its belly, claiming that they are eating his flesh and drinking his blood (3).

As for the second approach to answering this objection, we say:

The position of the imams of Islam is that a prescribed practice is not to be abandoned merely because it is performed by people of religious innovation, whether the Rāfidah or anyone else. The legal principles of all the imams accord (4) with this. One example is the issue he mentioned of flattening graves,

(1) A and B read: “they hate it.” (2) Lisān al-Arab states: “Hays means mixing, and the dish called hays derives its name from this. Hays consists of dried curds mixed with dates and clarified butter.” (3) Donaldson writes in The Shi‘ite Religion, p. 25 (al-Khānjī ed., 1365/1946): “In A Dictionary of Islam, p. 128, Hughes relates a curious account of the Festival of Ghadīr. He states: ‘The Shi‘a hold a festival on the eighteenth of Dhū al-Hijja. On that day, they make three figures from dough and fill their bellies with honey. These represent Abū Bakr, Umar, and Uthmān. They then stab them with knives, causing the honey to flow as a representation of the blood of the usurping caliphs.’” (4) A and B read: “agree with this.”
