and praying in a congregational mosque built by Banū Umayya. It is well known that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—used to pray facing the Kaaba that the polytheists had built, live in the dwellings they had constructed, drink [the water] (1) from the wells they had dug, wear [some of] (2) the garments they had woven, and conduct transactions using the dirhams they had minted. If he benefited from their dwellings and clothing, the water they had brought forth (3), and the mosques they had built, then what of the people of the qibla?!
Even supposing that Yazīd had been a disbeliever and had dug a canal, drinking from it (4) would not be considered disliked by the consensus of the Muslims. Yet because of their extreme partisanship, they disliked anything associated with someone they hated.
A trustworthy person told me that a man (5) among them owned a dog, and another of them called out to it, “Bukayr!”
