Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Harb ibn Umayya to govern Najran, or his son (1) Yazīd, and the Prophet died while he was still governing it (2). [The Prophet of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—] (3) also formed marriage ties with the Banū Umayya through his three daughters. He married his eldest daughter, Zaynab, to Abū al-Ās ibn al-Rabī ibn Umayya ibn Abd Shams (4). He praised his son-in-law when Alī wished to marry a daughter (5) of Abū Jahl: he mentioned one of his sons-in-law from the descendants of [Umayya] (6) ibn Abd Shams and spoke highly of his conduct as a son-in-law, saying:

“He spoke to me and was truthful with me (7), and he made me a promise and kept it.” (8)

(1) S, R, and H read: “and his son.” (2) *Al-Isāba*, 2/172, states: “It is also said that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—appointed him governor of Najrān, but this is not established. Al-Wāqidī said: ‘Our authorities reject this and maintain that Abū Sufyān was in Mecca when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—died, while 'Amr ibn Hazm was governor of Najrān at that time.’” *Usd al-Ghāba*, 5/491–492 (al-Sha'b ed.), states that Abū Bakr placed Yazīd ibn Abī Sufyān in command of an army and sent him to Syria, and that 'Umar ibn al-Khattāb later appointed him governor of Palestine. (3) The words between square brackets are an addition in A and B. (4) The account of Abū al-'Ās ibn al-Rabī's marriage to Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger—may Allah be pleased with them both—as well as his capture at Badr, Zaynab’s payment of his ransom, the Prophet’s request—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that his Companions release him for her, their release of him, and his subsequent acceptance of Islam, appears in *Sīrat Ibn Hishām*, 2/306–315. See also *al-Musnad*, 6/276. (5) A and B read: *bi-ibnat* (“to a daughter of”). (6) “Umayya” is an addition in A and B. (7) A and B read: “and he spoke truthfully.” (8) The hadith narrated by al-Miswar ibn Makhrama—may Allah be pleased with him—is found in *al-Bukhārī*, 3/190 (Book of Conditions, chapter “Conditions Concerning the Dowry at the Conclusion of Marriage”), 5/22–23 (Book of the Merits of the Prophet’s Companions, chapter “The Prophet’s Sons-in-Law, Including Abū al-'Ās ibn al-Rabī'”), and 7/37 (Book of Marriage, chapter “A Man’s Defense of His Daughter Out of Protective Jealousy and Fairness”); *Muslim*, 4/1902–1904 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, chapter “The Merits of Fātima”); *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 2/304–305 (Book of Marriage, chapter “Women Whom It Is Disliked to Have Together in Marriage”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 5/359–360 (Book of Virtues, chapter “Reports Concerning the Merit of Fātima—may Allah be pleased with her”); *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 1/643–644 (Book of Marriage, chapter “Protective Jealousy”); and *al-Musnad*, 4/5, 328 (al-Halabī ed.).
