him and grant him peace—used to say during his qunūt [whenever he performed qunūt] (1): O Allah, save al-Walīd ibn al-Walīd, save Salama (2) ibn Hishām, Ayyāsh ibn Abī Rabīa, and the oppressed believers.” (3)

This al-Walīd was a devout believer, whereas his father, al-Walīd, was a wretched unbeliever. Similarly, Uqba ibn Abī Muayt was one of the unbelievers of Quraysh. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “I saw in a dream that I was in the home of Uqba ibn Rāfi, and we were brought some fresh Ibn Tāb dates (4). (1) The words “whenever he performed qunūt” are omitted in N and M. (2) A and B read: “and Salama”; N and M read: “and save Salama”; S reads: “O Allah, save Salama.” (3) The hadith, with some differences in wording, is narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Bukhārī, 6/48–49 (Book of Quranic Exegesis, Exegesis of Sūrat al-Baqara, Chapter: “Perhaps Allah will pardon them…”), and 9/19–20 (Book of Coercion, Chapter on the words of Allah Most High: “Except one who is compelled while his heart remains secure in faith”); Muslim, 1/466–468 (Book of Mosques, Chapter on the Desirability of Qunūt in All Prayers…); and Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 2/92 (Book of Prayer, Chapter on Qunūt in the Prayers). (4) A reads: “Ibn Tāt”; B reads: “min Tāb.” (5) B reads: “as elevation.” (6) The hadith is narrated with similar wording from Anas ibn Mālik—may Allah be pleased with him—in Muslim, 4/1779 (Book of Visions, Chapter on the Vision of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The editor states: “The phrase ‘fresh dates of the Ibn Tāb variety’ refers to a well-known type of fresh date… It is named after Ibn Tāb, a man from Medina.” The hadith is also found in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 4/418 (Book of Etiquette, Chapter on Reports Concerning Visions), and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 3/286.
