of all sects when it comes to transmitted and rational proofs. Any of those who profess knowledge and religion who inwardly joins their ranks (1) can only be among the most ignorant of people or an atheistic heretic.

[The Rāfidī’s argument that following the Imāmī school is obligatory because, unlike others, they did not adopt partisan bias in support of anything other than the truth]

Chapter (2)

The Rāfidī (3) said: “The fifth argument demonstrating the obligation to follow the Imāmī school is that they did not adopt (4) partisan bias in support of anything other than the truth, unlike others (5). Al-Ghazālī and al-Māwardī (6), who are both (7) leading Shāfi'ī scholars, stated that making graves flat is the prescribed practice. However, when the Rāfidīs made this one of their distinguishing practices (8), we abandoned it in favor of mounding them. Al-Zamakhsharī also stated,”

(1) A and B read: “inwardly and outwardly.” The phrase “inwardly and outwardly” is omitted from H, S, and R. (2) H, S, and R read: “Chapter Sixteen.” The word “Chapter” is omitted from N and M. (3) In K, p. [0–9] 08 (M). (4) K reads: “The fifth argument is that the Imāmīs did not adopt.” (5) The phrase “unlike others” is absent from K. (6) The reading “and al-Māwardī” occurs only in B. K reads: “and al-Mutawakkil,” while all the other manuscripts read: “al-Mubarrad.” Al-Mubarrad was Abū al-Abbās Muhammad ibn Yazīd ibn Abd al-Akthar al-Thumālī al-Azdī, an authority on language, literature, and grammar. He is not known to have been a leading jurist, particularly in Shāfiī jurisprudence. He was born in 210 AH and died in 286 AH (see al-Alām, 8/15). The readings found in the various manuscripts are therefore undoubtedly corrupt. As for the reading in K—namely, al-Mutawakkil—I have found no one by that name among the Shāfiī jurists. The reading selected by the editor of B, namely al-Māwardī, is possible, since he was one of the leading Shāfiī jurists. He was Abū al-Hasan Alī ibn Muhammad ibn Habīb al-Māwardī, born in 364 AH and deceased in 450 AH. He wrote al-Hāwī on Shāfiī jurisprudence, comprising more than twenty volumes, and was the preeminent judge of his age. He also wrote al-Ahkām al-Sultāniyya, which has been published. See his biography in Tabaqāt al-Shāfiiyya, 5/267–285, and al-Alām, 5/146–147. (7) K reads: “and they were both.” (8) S reads: “that as a distinguishing practice among…”
