Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

of the kind that Allah has (1) kept the truthful who are not of the Prophet’s Household free from—so what, then, of the truthful (2) among them (3)?!

As for his statement, “Many of the jurists of the majority learned from him (4),” this is among the most blatant falsehoods. The well-known jurists of the majority are not known to have learned anything from him. If some obscure jurists of the majority did learn from him, that is not denied, for students of the jurists may learn from those of middling knowledge and even from those below that level.

[As for what some people relate—that Ma‘rūf al-Karkhī was his servant, and that

(1) The particle *qad* (here, “has”) is added in N, M, and W. (2) “The truthful” is omitted from A and B. (3) Al-Dhahabī states in *Mīzān al-I‘tidāl*, 2/616: “‘Abd al-Salām ibn Sālih, Abū al-Salt al-Harawī, was a righteous man, though a staunch Shi‘i. He narrated from Hammād ibn Zayd, Abū Mu‘āwiyah, and ‘Alī al-Ridā. Abū Hātim said, ‘I did not regard him as truthful,’ and Abū Zur‘ah crossed out his hadiths. Al-‘Uqaylī said, ‘He was a vile Rāfidī.’ Ibn ‘Adī said, ‘He stands accused.’ Al-Nasā’ī said, ‘He is not trustworthy.’ Al-Dāraqutnī said, ‘He was a vile Rāfidī accused of fabricating the hadith, “Faith is affirmation in the heart.”’ It is also reported that he said, ‘A dog belonging to an ‘Alid woman is better than the Umayyads.’” (4) B reads: “The famous jurists learned much from him.” In his biographical entry on ‘Alī al-Ridā in *Mīzān al-I‘tidāl*, 3/158, al-Dhahabī states: “‘Alī ibn Mūsā ibn Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, the Hāshimī ‘Alid, al-Ridā, narrated from his father, from his grandfather. Ibn Tāhir said, ‘He relates extraordinary reports from his father.’ I say: ‘The real issue is whether the chain of transmission to him can be established. Otherwise, lies have been attributed to the man, and a widely circulated collection was fabricated in his name. He did not lie about his grandfather Ja‘far al-Sādiq. Abū al-Salt al-Harawī, one of those under accusation, narrated from him, and reports from him were also transmitted by the judge ‘Alī ibn Mahdī…’ Abū al-Hasan al-Dāraqutnī said, ‘Ibn Hibbān informed us in his book, saying: “Extraordinary reports are narrated from ‘Alī ibn Mūsā al-Ridā; he falls into confusion and error.”’”
