[The Rāfidī’s remarks concerning Ali ibn Mūsā al-Ridā and the response to them]

Chapter (1)

The Rāfidī said (2):

“His son Ali al-Ridā (3) was the most ascetic person of his time and [was] the most learned among them (4). The jurists of the majority learned much from him (5). Al-Ma’mūn designated him as his successor because he knew of the perfection and virtue he possessed (6).

“One day, he admonished his brother Zayd (7), saying, ‘Zayd (8), what answer will you give to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—for having shed blood, unlawfully seized wealth, and made the roads unsafe (9), after being deceived by the fools (10) of Kūfa? Yet the Messenger of Allah has said (11)

(1) R, S, and H read: “Chapter Nine.” (2) “The Rāfidī” is omitted from N, M, W, A, and B. The following passage appears in K, p. [0–9] 20 (M), 103 (M). (3) K reads: “Alī ibn Mūsā al-Ridā—peace be upon him.” (4) “And he was the most learned among them”: thus in A and B. The other manuscripts read: “and the most learned among them.” This sentence is omitted from K. (5) A and B read: “The renowned jurists learned much from him.” (6) Abū al-Hasan Alī ibn Mūsā ibn Jafar, known as al-Ridā, was the eighth Imam according to the Rāfidīs. He was born in Medina in 153 AH to an Abyssinian mother. The caliph al-Mamūn loved him, designated him as his successor to the caliphate, gave him his daughter in marriage, and had his name struck on dinars and dirhams. For his sake, he also changed the Abbasid colors from black to green. The people of Baghdad consequently revolted, deposed al-Mamūn, and appointed his uncle Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mahdī. Al-Mamūn, however, defeated them and suppressed their revolt. Al-Ridā died in 203 AH, during al-Mamūn’s lifetime. See his biography in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 7/386–389; *Wafayāt al-Ayān*, 2/432–434; *Mīzān al-Itidāl*, 3/158; and *al-Alām*, 5/178. (7) “Zayd” is omitted from A and B. (8) A, B, S, R, H, and W read: “He said to him, ‘Zayd…’” (9) K, p. [0–9] 30 (M), gives the order: “shed blood, made the roads unsafe, and unlawfully seized money.” (10) K reads: “a foolish woman deceived you”; S reads: “and a foolish woman deceived you.” (11) B alone reads: “or what he said.” The other manuscripts read: “and what he said.” The reading adopted here is from K.
