I love him, so love him, and love whoever loves him.’” (1). Why, then, was Ibrāhīm not made a ransom for this one, for whom he prayed that Allah love whoever loves him? (2).

[The Rāfidi’s discussion of Zayn al-Ābidīn and Muhammad al-Bāqir, and the response to it]

[(Section)] (3).

As for Alī ibn al-Husayn (4), he was among the eminent Successors and their foremost figures in knowledge and piety. He learned from his father; Ibn Abbās; al-Miswar ibn Makhrama; Abū Rāfi, the Prophet’s freedman—peace and blessings be upon him; Aisha, Umm Salama, and Safiyya, the Mothers of the Believers; and from Marwān ibn al-Hakam, Saīd ibn al-Musayyib, and Abd Allah ibn Uthmān ibn Affān,

(1) The hadith narrated by Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—is recorded in al-Bukhārī, 7/159 (Book of Dress, chapter “Necklaces for Children”). Its wording is: Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “I was with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—in one of the markets of Medina. He departed, and I followed him. He asked three times, ‘Where is the little one?’ Then he said, ‘Call al-Hasan ibn Alī.’ Al-Hasan ibn Alī came walking with a necklace around his neck. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—gestured with his hand like this, and al-Hasan likewise gestured with his hand. He then embraced him and said, ‘O Allah, I love him, so love him, and love whoever loves him.’” Abū Hurayra said: “After the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said this, no one was dearer to me than al-Hasan ibn Alī.” The hadith is also recorded in Muslim, 4/1883 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, chapter on the merits of al-Hasan and al-Husayn—may Allah be pleased with them both); Sunan Ibn Mājah, 1/51 (Introduction, chapter 11); al-Musnad (al-Maārif ed.), 13/129; and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 2/331 and 2/532. (2) A and B read: “he loved him.” (3) N, M, and W omit “Section.” (4) N, M, S, R, H, and W read: “may Allah be pleased with him.” He was Abū al-Hasan Alī ibn al-Husayn ibn Alī ibn Abī Tālib, known as Zayn al-Ābidīn. He is regarded as the fourth Imam by the Rāfidis. He is called “Alī the Younger” to distinguish him from his brother “Alī the Elder,” who was killed alongside his father, al-Husayn, at Karbalā in 61 AH. Zayn al-Ābidīn was born in 38 AH and died in 94 AH. See his biography in Wafayāt al-Ayān, 2/429–431; Tabaqāt Ibn Sad, 5/211–222; Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, 7/304–307; Sifat al-Safwa, 2/52–57; Hilyat al-Awliyā, 3/133–145; and al-Alām, 5/86.
