Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

And he said to the Asharīs:

“When the Asharīs run out of provisions during a military expedition, or when their families (1) in Medina run out of provisions, they gather whatever they have in a single cloth and then divide it equally among themselves. They are from me, and I am from them.”

This report is in the Sahīh (2), and the preceding report is likewise in the Sahīh.

It is [also] (3) related in the Sahīh that he said concerning Julaybīb (4):

“This man is from me, and I am from him [this man is from me, and I am from him].” (5) (6)

This matter is discussed at length in its proper place.

(1) N, M, W, H, and R read: “their dependants.” (2) The hadith is narrated with similar wording from Abū Mūsā al-Asharī—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Bukhārī, 3/138 (Book of Partnership, chapter “Sharing Food and Pooling Provisions…”), and Muslim, 4/1944–1945 (Book of the Virtues of the Companions, chapter “Some Virtues of the Asharīs—may Allah be pleased with them”). The phrase “when they ran out of provisions during a military expedition” means that their food was exhausted. (3) The word “also” is omitted from N, M, and W. (4) All manuscripts read “Khaybab,” which is an error. The correction is taken from al-Dhahabī’s *al-Muntaqā min Minhāj al-Itidāl*, p. 170. Ibn Hajar said concerning him—may Allah be pleased with him—in *al-Isāba*, 1/244: “No lineage is given for him; Julaybīb is the diminutive of *jilbāb*.” (5) The text between square brackets is omitted from N, M, A, and B. (6) The hadith is narrated from Abū Barza al-Aslamī—may Allah be pleased with him—in Muslim, 4/1918–1919. Its wording is: “The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was on one of his military expeditions, and Allah granted him spoils. He asked his Companions, ‘Is anyone missing?’ They replied, ‘Yes, so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so.’ He again asked, ‘Is anyone missing?’ They replied, ‘Yes, so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so.’ He then asked once more, ‘Is anyone missing?’ They replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘But I am missing Julaybīb.’ They searched for him among the slain and found him beside seven men whom he had killed before they killed him. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—came and stood over him, saying, ‘He killed seven men before they killed him. This man is from me, and I am from him. This man is from me, and I am from him.’ He then placed him across his forearms, with only the Prophet’s forearms serving as his bier. A grave was dug for him, and he was placed in it.” The narrator made no mention of his being washed. The hadith also appears in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 4/421, 422, 425.
