al-Baqarah: 54]—that is, some of you should kill others among you (1).
Another example is His saying, Exalted is He:
“And when We took your covenant: ‘Do not shed your own blood or expel yourselves from your homes.’” [Surah al-Baqarah: 84]
That is, none of you should expel another (2). Thus, “yourselves” means your brothers, whether by lineage or in religion (3).
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to Ali:
“You are from me, and I am from you.” (4)
(1) See the interpretation of this verse in al-Tabarī’s Tafsīr (al-Maārif ed.), 2/72, 79. See also report no. 934 (p. 73), in which Abū Abd al-Rahmān said concerning the words “Kill yourselves”: “They took up daggers and began stabbing one another.”
(2) In al-Tabarī’s commentary on this verse, 2/301 (al-Maārif ed.), Abū al-Āliya explained the words “And when We took your covenant: ‘Do not shed your own blood’” as meaning: “None of you should kill another”; and the words “Nor expel yourselves from your homes” as meaning: “None of you should expel another from their homes.”
(3) See the Shia interpretation of His saying, Exalted is He, “Ourselves and yourselves,” as related from some of their scholars by Dr. Ahmad Subhī in his book The Theory of the Imamate among the Twelver Shia, pp. 177–178, al-Maārif ed., 1969.
(4) This statement is part of a lengthy hadith narrated from al-Barā ibn Azib—may Allah be pleased with him—which appears in three places in al-Bukhārī. The first is at 3/184–185 (Book of Peacemaking, chapter “How to Write: ‘This Is What So-and-So Son of So-and-So Has Agreed To…’”). This is the hadith concerning the Treaty of al-Hudaybiya. It begins: “I heard al-Barā ibn Azib—may Allah be pleased with them both—say: ‘When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—concluded the treaty with the people of al-Hudaybiya, Alī drew up a written agreement between them…’” It includes the words: “He said, ‘I am the Messenger of Allah, and I am Muhammad ibn Abd Allāh.’” Its final portion reads: “The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—departed, and Hamza’s daughter followed them, crying, ‘Uncle! Uncle!’ Alī reached out to her, took her by the hand, and said to Fātima—peace be upon her—‘Here is your paternal uncle’s daughter; take her.’ Alī, Zayd, and Jafar then disputed over her. Alī said, ‘I have the greatest right to her, for she is my paternal uncle’s daughter.’ Jafar said, ‘She is my paternal uncle’s daughter, and her maternal aunt is my wife.’ Zayd said, ‘She is my brother’s daughter.’ The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—awarded her custody to her maternal aunt and said, ‘A maternal aunt has the status of a mother.’ He said to Alī, ‘You are from me, and I am from you’; to Jafar, ‘You resemble me in appearance and character’; and to Zayd, ‘You are our brother and our freedman.’”
The hadith also appears in al-Bukhārī, 4/103–104 (Book of Jizya and Truces, chapter “Concluding a Truce for Three Days…”), although this statement does not occur there; and 5/141–142 (Book of Military Expeditions, chapter “The Compensatory Umrah”). Al-Bukhārī also cites this statement at the beginning of the chapter on the merits of Alī ibn Abī Tālib in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions, 5/18, but does not relate the hadith in full.
This statement also occurs in other hadiths, including one narrated from Habashī ibn Junāda—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 5/299–300 (Book of Virtues, chapter 85): “Alī is from me, and I am from Alī; no one may act on my behalf except me or Alī.” This hadith is also found in Sunan Ibn Mājah, 1/44 (Introduction, chapter “The Virtue of Alī ibn Abī Tālib”), and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 4/164, 165. The statement also occurs in another hadith narrated from Usāma ibn Zayd in al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 5/204. See also al-Muhibb al-Tabarī, al-Riyād al-Nadira, 2/225–226.
