the Helpers themselves (1); rather, he established brotherhood between the Emigrants and the Helpers, as he did between Saʿd ibn al-Rabī and Abd al-Rahmān ibn Awf, and between Salmān al-Fārisī and Abū al-Dardā, as is authentically established (2).
As for His words, “ourselves and yourselves,” this is like His saying:
“Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and women not think well of one another?” [Surah al-Nūr: 12]
This was revealed concerning the story of [Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—in] (3) the Slander (4), for every individual believer is one of the believing men and women themselves (5).
Likewise, He—Exalted is He—says:
“Turn in repentance to your Creator and kill yourselves.” [Surah
(1) (A) and (B): min (“from”).
(2) Reports concerning the Prophet’s establishment of brotherhood among a number of the Companions occur in several places in al-Bukhārī. See, for example, al-Bukhārī, 5/3132 (Book of the Merits of the Ansār, chapter “The Prophet’s Establishment of Brotherhood between the Muhājirūn and the Ansār”), and 5/69 (Book of the Merits of the Ansār, chapter “How the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—Established Brotherhood among His Companions”). See also Muslim, 4/1960 (Book of the Virtues of the Companions, chapter “The Prophet’s Establishment of Brotherhood among His Companions”); and Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 4/23 (Book of Renunciation, chapter 48).
(3) The text in square brackets is an addition in (A) and (B).
(4) The Hadith of the Slander is a lengthy hadith narrated from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her. It begins as follows, according to the wording of al-Bukhārī, 5/116: Aisha said, “Whenever the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—intended to travel, he would draw lots among his wives, and whichever wife’s lot was drawn, he would take her with him.” The hadith is found in al-Bukhārī, 3/173–176 (Book of Testimonies, chapter “Women Attesting to the Uprightness of One Another”), 5/116–120 (Book of Military Expeditions, chapter “The Hadith of the Slander”), and 6/76–77 (Book of Quranic Exegesis, Surah Yūsuf); Muslim, 4/2129–2138 (Book of Repentance, chapter “The Hadith of the Slander”); and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 6/194–197.
(5) (A) and (B): nafs (“self”).
