Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

and when He inspires them to do what He has commanded and to refrain from what He has forbidden, (1) purity and the removal of impurity are attained.

Further evidence that this is something they were commanded to do, rather than something whose occurrence was affirmed (2), is the authentic report that “the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—drew his cloak around Alī, Fātima (3), Hasan, and Husayn, then said:

“O Allah, these are the People of my House. Remove impurity from them and purify them completely.”

Muslim narrated this hadith in his Sahīh from Ā’isha, while the compilers of the Sunan collections narrated it from Umm Salama. (4) It proves [the opposite of] (5) the Rāfidīs’ position in two respects. The first is that he supplicated for this on their behalf, which proves that the verse did not affirm that it had occurred. (6) For had it already (7) occurred,

(1) (A) and (B) read: “to do what they were commanded to do and refrain from what they were forbidden to do … was attained.” (2) (S), (H), (M), (R), and (W) read: “not something whose occurrence was stated.” (3) (A) and (B) read: “Fātima and Alī.” (4) The hadith narrated from Ā’isha—may Allah be pleased with her—is in Muslim, 4/1883 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, Chapter on the Merits of the Household of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Its wording is: “Ā’isha said: The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—went out early one morning wearing a black woolen cloak patterned with camel-saddle motifs. Al-Hasan ibn Alī came, and he took him beneath it. Then al-Husayn came and joined him beneath it. Fātima then came, and he took her beneath it. Alī then came, and he took him beneath it. He then said: ‘Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you completely’ [Sūrat al-Ahzāb: 33].” A hadith with similar wording is narrated from Umm Salama—may Allah be pleased with her—in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, vol. 5 (Book of Tafsīr, Sūrat al-Ahzāb), 5/328 (Book of Virtues, Chapter on the Virtues of the Household of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 6/4298, 292. It also forms part of a lengthy hadith from Ibn Abbās in al-Musnad (al-Maʿārif ed.), 5/25 27. (5) “The opposite of” is omitted from (N). (6) (A), (B), (S), (H), and (R) read: “that he did not state that this had occurred.” (7) “Already” is omitted from (A) and (B).
