Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Whenever Quraysh see him, one of them declares:
“In this man’s virtues, all nobility reaches its height.”

If the people of piety are counted, they are their leaders;
if asked, “Who are the best people on earth?” (1)
the answer is, “They are.”

This is Fātimah’s son, if you do not know him;
through his grandfather the line of Allah’s prophets was sealed.

He lowers his eyes in modesty, and others lower theirs in awe of him;
no one speaks to him until he smiles.

The light of guidance breaks forth from the dawn of his countenance,
as darkness parts before the radiance of the sun.

His noble stock springs from the Messenger of Allah;
noble are his roots, his nature, and his traits.

Allah ennobled him from of old and favored him;
the Pen inscribed this for him upon His Tablet. (2)

He is of a clan whose love is religion, whose hatred is unbelief,
and nearness to whom is a refuge and a stronghold.

No generous soul can surpass the heights they have attained,
nor can any people approach them, however noble they may be.

They are rainclouds whenever a crisis bears down,
and lions—the lions of al-Sharā—while their counsel (3) burns fierce.

Hardship does not diminish (4) the bounty of their open palms;
it is all the same whether they are wealthy or have nothing.

He never said “no” save in his testimony of faith;
but for that testimony, his “no” would have been “yes.”

Through love of them, evil (5) and affliction are warded off,
and through it goodness and blessings are won.

After the remembrance of Allah, mention of them comes foremost
in every righteous deed (6), and with it all speech is sealed.

Whoever knows Allah knows the foremost rank of this man (7);
from this man’s House the nations received religion. (8)

(1) (K) reads: “Or if asked, ‘Who is the best of Allah’s creation?’” (2) (S) reads: “in the Tablet and the Pen.” (3) (B) alone reads: “and battle rages fiercely.” (4) (B) alone reads: “does not withhold”; (K): “does not draw back.” (5) (N) and (M) read: “evil”; (K): “harm.” (6) (B) alone reads: “beginning.” (7) (N), (M), (A), (R), and (H) read *awwaliyyatahu* (“his primacy”); (W), (S), and *Dīwān al-Farazdaq* (p. 849) read *awwaliyyata dhā* (“the primacy of this man”). The reading adopted here, *awlawiyyata dhā* (“the foremost rank of this man”), is from (B) and (K). (8) In (K), the following verse appears after this line: “Your asking, ‘Who is this?’ does him no harm; Arabs and non-Arabs know the man you pretended not to recognize.” This final verse was written in the margin of (K). *Al-Aghānī*, 15/327, reads: “So your asking…” Of these verses, only six appear in *Dīwān al-Farazdaq* (Cairo ed., 1354/1936), and the attribution of the remaining verses is highly disputed. See *al-Aghānī*, 15/326–329 (Dār al-Kutub ed.).
