Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Among the Rāfida are those who hold that Moses ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad became Imam after his father, but who say:

“Moses ibn Jafar(1) is alive. He has not died, nor will he die until he rules the earth from east to west.”

This group is called the Wāqifa(2), because they stopped at Moses ibn Jafar and did not go beyond him. They are also called the Mamtūra (the Rain-Soaked), because Yūnus ibn Abd al-Rahmān debated them and said:

“You are more contemptible in my eyes(3) than rain-soaked dogs(4).”

Thus this epithet stuck to them.(5)

Among them were some who withheld judgment(6) \ 101 concerning Moses ibn Jafar, saying:

“We do not know whether he died or not.”

Others say:

“Moses ibn Jafar designated his son Ahmad(7) for the Imamate.”

Among the Rāfida are also those who said:

“After Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, the Awaited One according to the Twelvers,

(1) This is omitted from (A) and (B), both of which read: “Mūsā ibn Jafar, and that he is alive.” (2) (A) and (B) read: “the Wāqifiyya.” The reading adopted in the text occurs in the remaining manuscripts and in *Al-Maqālāt*, 1/100. (3) (A), (M), (S), (H), and (W) read: “You are higher”; (B) reads: “You are dearer.” The reading adopted in the text follows (R) and *Al-Maqālāt*. (4) (N) and (M) read: *al-Mahtūra*. (5) *Al-Maqālāt* states: “Some opponents of this sect call them the *Mamtūra* (the Rain-Soaked). This is because one of them debated Yūnus ibn Abd al-Rahmān, who belonged to the Qatiyya—those who affirmed with certainty that Mūsā ibn Jafar had died. Yūnus said to him: ‘You are more contemptible in my eyes than rain-soaked dogs.’ Thus this derisive nickname stuck to them.” (6) (A), (B), (S), (H), and (R) read: “withheld judgment.” See *Al-Maqālāt*, 1. (7) *Al-Maqālāt*, 1/101, reads: “Ahmad ibn Yūnus ibn Jafar.”
