whose imamate had been expressly designated. Apart from the Kāmiliyya, they comprise twenty-four sects. They are known as the Imāmiyya because they hold that Alī’s imamate was explicitly designated.
The first sect is the Qatiyya(1). They were called the Qatiyya(2) because they categorically affirmed that Mūsā ibn Jafar(3) ibn Muhammad had died. They and the majority of the Shia claim(4) that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—explicitly designated Alī(5) as imam; that Alī explicitly designated al-Hasan(6) as imam; that al-Hasan explicitly designated al-Husayn(7) as imam; that al-Husayn(8) explicitly designated his son Alī ibn al-Husayn as imam; that Alī(9) ibn al-Husayn explicitly designated his son Abū Jafar Muhammad(10) as imam; that Muhammad explicitly designated Jafar ibn Muhammad(11) as imam; that Jafar explicitly designated his son Mūsā(12) as imam; that Mūsā explicitly designated his son Alī as imam; and Alī
