Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

This very man whom he made his supreme shaykh (1), and whose statement he cited, is among those who maintain that (2) Allah acts by the necessity of His essence (3). He also holds that the world is eternal, as he stated (4) in his book (5), “Sharh al-Ishārāt” (Commentary on the Pointers) (6). According to his own position, therefore, this shaykh of his whom he cited must be an unbeliever; and an unbeliever’s statement is not accepted (7) regarding the religion of the Muslims.

Second: This man became notorious among the elite and common people alike for having served as vizier to the heretical esoteric Ismailis at Alamut (8). Then, when the polytheistic Turks entered the lands of the Muslims (9) and came to Baghdad—the seat of the caliphate—this man served as astrologer and adviser to Hulagu (10), king of the polytheistic Turks. He advised him to kill the caliph,

(1) The word “supreme” is omitted from (N), (M), (W), and (H). (2) (A) and (B) read: *inna* (“indeed”). (3) (N) and (M) read: “by His essence.” (4) (A) and (B) read: “as noted above from.” (5) The word “book” is omitted from (N) and (M). (6) In *Dar’ Ta‘ārud al-‘Aql wa-l-Naql* (Averting the Conflict between Reason and Revelation), Ibn Taymiyya quoted extensive passages from Nasīr al-Dīn al-Tūsī’s *Sharh al-Ishārāt* (Commentary on the Pointers) and commented on them at length. See vol. [0–9]0, pp. [0–9]9–84, 111–117, and 164–179. (7) (W) reads: “No statement of his is accepted.” (8) (A) and (B) read: *bi-l-Alawīt*; (S) reads: *bi-l-awwal* (“at the former”). See my discussion in the Introduction, p. [0–9]3. Alamut Fort, or Alamut Castle—meaning “the Eagle’s Nest”—was a fortress in the mountains of Daylam, in the Tālaqān region south of the Caspian Sea. It was built by one of the kings of Daylam. Hasan ibn ‘Alī ibn Muhammad ibn Ja‘far ibn Sabbāh al-Himyarī seized it in 483 AH and made it the center of his mission. After him, it remained the center of the Ismaili Imams until 654 AH, when Hulagu captured and destroyed it along with their other fortresses. See *Tā’ifat al-Ismā‘īliyya* (The Ismaili Sect), pp. 62–90; Mustafā Ghālib, *Tārīkh al-Da‘wa al-Ismā‘īliyya* (History of the Ismaili Mission), pp. [0–9]62–290; *al-Milal wa-l-Nihal* (Religions and Sects), 1/175; and *Bayān Madhhab al-Bātiniyya* (Exposition of the Esotericists’ Doctrine), p. [0–9]0. (9) (N) and (M) read: “Islam.” (10) (A) and (B) read: “Halāku”; (M) reads: “Hūlā,” followed by a blank space.
