Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

the saved and doomed sects (1) in another sound hadith whose authenticity is agreed upon, namely his statement (2):

“The likeness of my Household is that of Noah’s Ark: whoever boarded it was saved, and whoever stayed behind drowned.”] (3),

We therefore found that the saved sect is the Imāmiyya (4), because they differ from every other school, whereas all the other schools hold their fundamental beliefs in common.’

The response may be given from several angles (5).

First: This Imāmī has declared anyone who says that Allah acts by the necessity of His essence to be an unbeliever, as seen in his preceding statement:

“It necessarily follows that Allah acts by the necessity of His essence, not by choice” (6). Thus, disbelief necessarily follows.

(1) (K) reads: “He—peace be upon him—identified the sect.” (2) (K) reads: “This is his statement—peace be upon him.” (3) The passage enclosed in square brackets appears in (K) and (B) but is omitted from all other manuscripts. Al-Albānī cited the hadith in *Da‘īf al-Jāmi‘ al-Saghīr*, 5/131, and graded it weak. Al-Suyūtī said: “Al-Bazzār narrated it from Ibn ‘Abbās and Ibn al-Zubayr; K (*al-Mustadrak* by al-Hākim), from Abū Dharr.” (4) (K) reads: “the Imāmiyya sect.” (5) (N) and (M) read: “I respond to this from several angles.” (6) (A) and (B) read: “It follows that Allah acts by the necessity of His essence, not by choice.” (A) reads: “by choice.”
