to this denouncer: “Produce decisive—decisive (1)—evidence that this is forbidden,” he would find none. Indeed, were he asked to produce evidence that eating dog meat is forbidden, with which to rebut Mālik regarding one of the two reports [from him, according to which he regards it as disliked but not forbidden] (2), he would be incapable of making such a rebuttal. Nevertheless, the sound view held by the majority of scholars is that the hide of a dog—and indeed of all beasts of prey—is not purified by tanning.

This is because it has been reported from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—[through multiple routes] (3) that he “forbade the use of the hides of beasts of prey.” (4) As for his statement—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(5), “Any hide that is tanned becomes pure,” Ahmad and others [among the leading hadith scholars] (6) classified it as weak, though Muslim narrated it. (1) The second occurrence of “decisive” is omitted from (N) and (M). (2) The passage enclosed in square brackets is omitted from (N) and (M). (3) The passage enclosed in square brackets is omitted from (N) and (M). (4) The hadith of Abū al-Malīh ibn Usāmah, from his father Usāmah al-Hudhalī—may Allah be pleased with him—is recorded in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4/96–97 (Book of Clothing, chapter “Reports Concerning the Hides of Leopards and Beasts of Prey”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 3/152–153 (Book of Clothing, chapter “The Prohibition Regarding the Hides of Beasts of Prey”); *Sunan al-Nasā’ī*, 7/156 (Book of al-Fara‘ and al-Atīrah, chapter “The Prohibition against Using the Hides of Beasts of Prey”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5/75. See also *Sunan al-Nasā’ī*, 7/155 (Book of al-Fara‘ and al-Atīrah, chapter “Permission to Use Carrion Hides Once Tanned”), for a hadith narrated from Aishah—may Allah be pleased with her—concerning the permissibility of using carrion hides once they have been tanned. (5) The phrase “may Allah bless him and grant him peace” is added in (A) and (B). (6) The passage enclosed in square brackets is omitted from (N) and (M); (A) and (B) read: “among the leading hadith scholars.” (7) The hadith narrated from Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—is recorded in Muslim, 1/277 (Book of Menstruation, chapter “The Purification of Carrion Hides by Tanning”), with the wording: “When a hide is tanned, it becomes pure.” See also al-Nawawī’s *Commentary on Muslim*, 4/53–54. The hadith is also recorded in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4/93 (Book of Clothing, chapter “Carrion Hides”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 3/135 (Book of Clothing, chapter “Carrion Hides Once Tanned”); *Sunan al-Nasā’ī*, 7/153 (Book of al-Fara‘ and al-Atīrah, chapter “Carrion Hides”); *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 2/1193 (Book of Clothing, chapter “Wearing Carrion Hides Once Tanned”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Ma‘ārif ed.), 3/273–274 (the editor states, “Its chain of transmission is authentic”), 4/144, and 5/71.
