Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

(1 And in al-Bukhārī:

“as long as two of them remain.” 1) (1).

(*) In the two Sahih collections, Jābir ibn Samura said: “I went with my father to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and heard him say (2):

‘Indeed, this authority will not come to an end until twelve caliphs from among them have passed.’

[He then said something softly that I did not understand—or he said: that I could not make out—so I asked my father, ‘What did the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—say?’ ‘All of them are from Quraysh.’ (3)

In another wording in the two Sahih collections, he said:

‘Islam shall remain mighty until there have been twelve caliphs.’] (4).

And in the two Sahih collections, from Jābir

(1) The passage marked (1–1) is omitted from (A) and (B). (M) reads: “And in one narration…” The hadith with this wording is narrated from Ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both—in Sahih al-Bukhārī, 4:179, Book of Virtues, chapter “The Virtues of Quraysh”; and 9:62, Book of Rulings, chapter “Rulers Are from Quraysh.” (2) (M) reads: “and grant him peace—then he said.” (3) The hadith is narrated from Jābir ibn Samura—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sahih al-Bukhārī, 9:81, Book of Rulings, chapter “Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā Narrated to Me.” Its wording is: “I heard the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say: ‘There will be twelve rulers.’ He then said something that I did not hear, so my father said: ‘He said: “All of them will be from Quraysh.”’” The hadith appears with wording similar to that quoted by Ibn Taymiyyah in Muslim, 3:1452, Book of Government, chapter “The People Follow Quraysh,” hadith no. 5, which states: “I asked my father, ‘What did he say?’ He replied: ‘All of them will be from Quraysh.’” The hadith is also found in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 4:150, Book of the Mahdī, the first hadith; and al-Musnad, al-Halabī ed., 5:90, 92, 93. (4) The passage between square brackets is omitted from (N); I have supplied it from (M). In (N), it is followed by the single phrase: “All of them will be from Quraysh.” I have omitted this phrase because it already appeared earlier in the passages found in manuscript (M). This final narration is likewise transmitted from Jābir ibn Samura—may Allah be pleased with him—in Muslim, 3:1453, Book of Government, chapter “The People Follow Quraysh,” hadith nos. 7, 8, and 9; Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Book of the Mahdī, the second and third hadiths; and al-Musnad, al-Halabī ed., 5:96, 98, 99, 100, 101.
