authority among you. If you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more excellent in outcome.”
[Surah al-Nisā: 59]
Thus, Allah commanded the believers, whenever they disagree, to refer the matter to Allah and the Messenger. Had there been any infallible person other than the Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(1), He would have commanded them to refer the matter to him (2). The Quran therefore demonstrates that no one is infallible except the Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(3).
[Commentary on his statement concerning the imamate:
“They did not restrict the imams to a fixed number”]
Chapter
As for his statement:
“They did not restrict the imams to a fixed number,”
this is correct. Allah Most High said:
“O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.”
[Surah al-Nisā: 59]
He did not limit them to any fixed number.
Likewise, in the numerous well-established hadiths authentically transmitted from him, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—did not limit those entrusted with authority to a fixed number.
It is related in the two Sahih collections that Abū Dharr said:
“My close friend instructed me to hear and obey, even if the ruler were an Abyssinian slave with mutilated limbs.” (4)
