The first is:
Either Iblīs performs acts, or he performs no (1) acts. If he performs no act, it is impossible to seek refuge with him, for in that case he cannot grant refuge to anyone and does nothing. If he does act, however, then exonerating him from acts of disobedience is invalid. Thus, it is clear that this objection fails whether divine decree is affirmed or denied. It is an objection raised by someone who has overlooked the two alternatives. Moreover, (2) if one supposes that Iblīs performs no act, then no evil (3) proceeds from him, such that anyone else could be said to be worse than him—much less (4) that Allah [Most High] (5) is worse than Iblīs (6).
Thus, this man’s claim that their position necessarily entails that Allah (7) is worse toward them than Iblīs is false. At most, one could maintain pure compulsion (8), as is reported of al-Jahm and his followers. The furthest consequence of this would be that (9) neither Iblīs nor anyone else possesses any power, will, or act; rather, his movement would be like the movement of air (10). On this supposition, neither good nor evil would proceed from him, and Allah Most High is the Creator of all of this. How, then, could it be said on this supposition (11) that one of His creatures is worse than He is?
