Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

His wrath toward it and hatred of it (1) consist in His willing the punishment (2) of the one who commits it. He therefore willed it to be a cause of its perpetrator’s punishment. As for us, we are commanded to hate what He forbids (3). Yet the response to this [view] (4) returns to (5) the first response: according to these people, Allah has commanded the servant to hate, detest, and be displeased with the very thing that He Himself willed, loved, and approved (6). Thus, they say:

“Not everything predestined and decreed is something with which one is commanded to be pleased.” (7)

The third response:

It may be said: It has already been established that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, does what He does because of the wisdom He has in doing so, and that He creates the sins and punishments that harm people because of the wisdom He has in doing so (8). A person may likewise do something he dislikes, such as drinking (9) unpalatable medicine because of the wisdom he [finds] (10) in it and loves—such as health and well-being. Thus, drinking the medicine is disliked from one perspective and loved from another. The servant therefore accords with his Lord and hates (11)

(1) (N) reads: “Allah is displeased with it and hates it”; (M): “through Allah’s displeasure and hatred.” At this point, collation with manuscript (M) resumes after the page missing from the facsimile, namely p. 83. (2) (A) and (B) read: “the will for punishment”; (M): “the will to punish.” (3) (A) and (B) read: “what is forbidden.” (4) The word “view” is omitted in (N) and (M). (5) (N) reads: “upon.” (6) (A) reads: “Allah has commanded that he hate it, detest it, and be displeased with it”; (B): “Allah has commanded that we hate it, detest it, and be displeased with it.” (7) (A) reads: “Not everything predestined is decreed with His approval”; (B): “Not everything predestined and decreed is something with which we are pleased”; (‘Ayn): “Not everything predestined is approved of and something with which one is pleased.” (8) The passage is omitted in (A) and (B). (N) and (M) read: “and that whatever harms a person in the form of sins and punishments, He does because of the wisdom He has in them”; (M) begins: “as for whatever” instead of “and that whatever.” (9) (‘Ayn) and (M) read: “such as drinking.” (10) “He has” is omitted in (N), (A), and (B). (11) (N) and (M) read: “and hates.”
