finds good, let him praise Allah; and whoever finds otherwise, let him blame none but himself.’”) (1).
And He—Most High—has said (2):
“Whatever good befalls you is from Allah, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself.”
[Surah al-Nisā’: 79]
That is, whatever blessings you love—such as victory and provision—befall you, Allah has bestowed them upon you; but whatever afflictions (3) you dislike befall you, they are due to your sins and misdeeds. Here (4), “good things” and “bad things” mean blessings and calamities, as He, Most High, says:
“We tested them with good things and bad things.”
[Surah al-A‘rāf: 68]
Likewise, He [Most High] (5) says:
“If good befalls you, it grieves them; but if a calamity befalls you, they say, ‘We took our precautions beforehand.’”
[Surah al-Tawba: 50]
And He, Most High, says:
“If good touches you, it grieves them; but if evil befalls you, they rejoice at it.”
[Surah Āl ‘Imrān: 120]
Similar to this is His [Most High] (6) saying:
“When We let people taste mercy, they rejoice in it; but when evil befalls them because of what their own hands have sent forth, they immediately despair.”
[Surah al-Rūm: 36]
Thus He informs us that whatever good He causes to befall people is mercy from Him, through which He shows kindness to
