And the Muslim community (1) unanimously agrees that Allah hates what He has forbidden, not what He has commanded, and loves what He has commanded, not what He has forbidden; that He loves the God-fearing, the doers of good, and the steadfast; that He loves those who continually repent and those who purify themselves; that He is pleased with those who believe and do righteous deeds; and that He detests the disbelievers and is angry with them.
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“No one loves praise more than Allah, and no one loves to accept excuses more than Allah.” (2)
He also said:
“No one has greater jealousy than Allah when His male or female servant commits unlawful sexual intercourse.” (3)
And he said:
“Indeed, Allah is One and loves what is odd-numbered.” (4),
(1) M reads: “Thus, the community”; N: “Thus, the verse,” which is a scribal error.
(2) The hadith is transmitted with variations in its wording and opening. It sometimes begins, “No one loves…,” and at other times, “There is no one who loves….” It is narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd—may Allah be pleased with him—and was cited previously in this volume, pp. 60–61.
(3) A and B read: “that He sees His male servant committing unlawful sexual intercourse with His female servant.” The hadith is narrated from ʿĀ’isha, Mother of the Believers—may Allah be pleased with her—in al-Bukhārī, 7:35, Book of Marriage, chapter “Protective Jealousy.” Its wording there is: “O community of Muhammad, no one has greater protective jealousy than Allah when He sees His male or female servant committing unlawful sexual intercourse. O community of Muhammad, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” The hadith is also narrated from her at greater length, beginning: “The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him.” It includes: “He then addressed the people, praised and extolled Allah, and said: ‘The sun and the moon are two of Allah’s signs.’” He then said: “O community of Muhammad, by Allah, no one has greater protective jealousy than Allah.” The hadith, with slight variations, appears in al-Bukhārī, 2:34, Book of Eclipses, chapter “Giving Charity during an Eclipse”; Muslim, 2:618, Book of Eclipses, chapter “The Eclipse Prayer”; Sunan al-Nasā’ī, 3:108, Book of Eclipses, chapter “Another Form of It”; and al-Musnad, al-Halabī ed., 6:164.
(4) Numerous hadiths with this wording are narrated from several Companions. Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—reported that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one. No one memorizes them but that he enters Paradise. Allah is One and loves what is odd-numbered.” This is the wording of Muslim, 4:2062–63, Book of Remembrance and Supplication, chapter “The Names of Allah Most High.” Similar wording appears in al-Bukhārī, 8:87, Book of Supplications, chapter “Allah Has One Hundred Names Less One”; and al-Musnad, al-Maʿārif ed., 13:244, no. 7493, repeated under nos. 7612, 8131, 9509, 10486, 10539, and 10696. The hadith also appears in Sunan Ibn Mājah, 2:1269, Book of Supplication, chapter “The Names of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” Another hadith is narrated from ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 2:83, Book of Witr, chapter “The Recommendation to Perform the Witr Prayer.” Its wording is: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: ‘O people of the Quran, perform the witr prayer, for Allah is One and loves what is odd-numbered.’” It also appears in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 1:282, Book of Witr, chapter “What Has Been Related concerning Witr Not Being Obligatory”; Sunan al-Nasā’ī, 3:187, Book of Night Prayer, chapter “The Command to Perform Witr”; Sunan Ibn Mājah, 1:370, Book of Establishing Prayer, chapter “What Has Been Related concerning Witr”; and al-Musnad, al-Maʿārif ed., 2:124, 164, as well as elsewhere. A third hadith is narrated from Ibn ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Musnad, al-Maʿārif ed., 8:177, with the wording: “Allah is One and loves what is odd-numbered.” It is repeated at 9:216.
