Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

of] (1) the authentic hadiths is it related that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Allah descends to the earth.” Every hadith in which such a statement is reported is an invented lie. These include the report of the gray camel; the report that [Allah] descends (2) on the afternoon of the Day of Arafah, embraces those riding, and shakes hands with those on foot (3); another report that he saw his Lord while circumambulating the Kaaba; another that he saw his Lord on the gravel plain of Mecca; and other such reports. By consensus of those knowledgeable in hadith, all of these reports are fabricated.

Among those who fabricated them was one group that falsely attributed them to hadith scholars so that it might be said, “They transmit things like this” (* just as they falsely attributed to them [such things as] (4) the report about horses’ sweat (5), while another group of ignorant and misguided people invented things like this *) (6), falsely attributing them to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—just as the Rāfidīs fabricated lies still graver and more numerous than these. Even if the only examples were the hadiths that this Imāmī cited in this work of his, they contain falsehood about which there is unanimous agreement among all scholars

(1) The words “anything from” are omitted from (N) and (M). (2) (N) and (M): “and that He descends.” (3) These hadiths were discussed previously at 2/528 (T [0–9]). See also *Tanzīh al-Sharī'a*, 1/138–139. (4) The word “like” is omitted from (N) and (M). (5) The word “upon them” occurs only in (N). In *al-La'ālī*, 1/3, al-Suyūtī quoted from al-Hākim this fabricated hadith: “Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—reported: It was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what was our Lord made from?’ He replied, ‘From intensely bitter water, neither from earth nor from heaven. He created horses and made them run until they sweated; then He created Himself from that sweat.’” Al-Suyūtī then cited al-Hākim’s judgment: “It is fabricated. Muhammad ibn Shujā' was accused of fabricating it, although no Muslim would invent anything like this.” Al-Suyūtī added: “I say: nor would any rational person.” He then quoted al-Dhahabī’s remarks concerning Abū Shujā' al-Thaljī. See also the account of Abū Shujā' in *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 6/692. Ibn 'Arrāq cited this hadith in *Tanzīh al-Sharī'a*, 1/134. (6) The passage between the asterisks is omitted from (A) and (B).
