some adherents of the qiblah, the occurrence of such a thing cannot be ruled out (1), for the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“You will surely follow the ways of those before you, as one arrow-feather matches another (2), to the point that if they entered a lizard’s hole (3), you would enter it too.” (4)
However, the resemblance—B (only): “because of the resemblance”—of the Rāfidīs to the Jews, and the presence (5) of such things among them, is more evident than their presence among those affiliated with the Sunnah [and the community] (6).
[Comments on the Rāfidī’s statement: The Throne exceeds Him by four fingers on every side]
As for his statement (7) that the Throne exceeds Him (8) by four fingers on every side;
(1) (Ayn) reads: “If something of the sort did occur.”
(2) (B) and (A) read: “as one sandal matches the other.” Ibn al-Athīr stated in *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth*, entry “q-dh-dh”: “The *qadhadh* are the feathers of an arrow; the singular is *qadhdha*. Hence the hadith: ‘You will surely follow the ways of those before you, as one arrow-feather matches another,’ meaning that each feather is measured to the exact dimensions of its counterpart and cut accordingly.”
(3) (B) and (A) read: “a dilapidated lizard hole.”
(4) The hadith, with some variation in wording, is narrated from Abū Saīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Bukhārī, 4/169 (*Book of the Prophets*, chapter “What Has Been Related about the Children of Israel”). A report with the same meaning from Abū Saīd al-Khudrī appears in al-Bukhārī, 9 (*Book of Holding Fast*, chapter “The Prophet’s Statement—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—‘You Will Surely Follow the Ways of Those before You’”); Muslim (*Book of Knowledge*, chapter “Following the Practices of the Jews and Christians”); *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 2/1422 (*Book of Tribulations*, chapter “The Division of the Nations”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 3/84, 89, 94. A report with the same meaning from Abū Hurayra appears in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 2/327, 450, 511, 527. The wording in al-Bukhārī is: “You will surely follow the ways of those before you, span by span and cubit by cubit, such that even if they entered a lizard’s hole, you would follow them into it.” We asked, “O Messenger of Allah, the Jews and Christians?” He replied, “Who else?”
(5) (B) and (A) read: “existence,” which is a textual corruption.
(6) “And the community” is absent from (Ayn), (N), and (M).
(7) See (K), 1/84 (M), and the present work, 2/400.
(8) (B), (A), (N), and (M) read: “some of the Throne is in excess of Him.” I previously preferred (2/500) the reading in (K): “and that some of the Throne remains in excess.”
