the form in which he was created, on two occasions (1): once between heaven and earth, and once in heaven at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary (2).
(1) Mustajī Zāda wrote the following marginal comment at this point in MS (Ayn): “This is the most cogent evidence for the author’s contention and refutes the view of those Muslims who maintain that angels are immaterial entities. Their view is also refuted by Allah Most High’s statement: ‘He appoints the angels as messengers with wings—two, three, and four’ (Surat Fātir 35:1). This indicates that Allah created them with bodily natures, since they possess wings, which are attributes peculiar to bodies. Nor can one appeal here to mere likeness, as may be done with most of the evidence adduced by the author. This is evident. It is also refuted (the original reads: ‘also refutes’) by the Lawgiver’s descriptions of them as ‘the inhabitants of the heavens,’ ‘the inhabitants of the earths,’ and ‘the inhabitants of the Frequented House,’ among others. In short, the doctrine that angels are immaterial was taken from the philosophers; those Muslims who espouse it do so in imitation of them. The words of Allah and His Messenger utterly reject it. Indeed, the view that angels and human souls—that is, their spirits—belong to the category of subtle bodies rather than immaterial entities almost ranks among the matters known by necessity in religion. The only qualification is that seeing them is conditioned upon and dependent on Allah’s will: whenever He—Glorified and Exalted—wills them to be seen, we see them; and whenever He does not will it, we do not see them.”
(2) Al-Bukhārī, 4/115 (Book of the Beginning of Creation, “Chapter: When One of You Says ‘Āmīn’”), contains a hadith narrated from Ibn Masūd—may Allah be pleased with him—stating that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—saw Gabriel with six hundred wings. The same hadith occurs twice more in al-Bukhārī: 6/141 (Book of Tafsīr, Surat al-Najm, “Chapter: And Was at a Distance of Two Bow-Lengths or Nearer”) and 6/141 (Book of Tafsīr, Surat al-Najm, “Chapter: Then He Revealed to His Servant What He Revealed”). At the same location, 6/140–141 (Book of Tafsīr, Surat al-Najm), there is a hadith from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—in which she was asked whether the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had seen his Lord. At the end of her response, she said: “Rather, he saw Gabriel—peace be upon him—in his own form twice.” In the same book, 6/141, under the chapter “He Certainly Saw Some of His Lord’s Greatest Signs,” Abdullah ibn Masūd—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “He saw a green covering that filled the horizon.” In *al-Musnad* (al-Ma'ārif ed.), Ibn Masūd—may Allah be pleased with him—narrates that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “I saw Gabriel at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, and he had six hundred wings…” See also al-Bukhārī, 4/151–116, and *al-Safadiyya*, 21/201–202.
