and Abū al-Akhwas Dāwūd ibn Asad al-Basrī (1).” He said: “Abū Īsā al-Warrāq and Ibn al-Rāwandī also affiliated themselves with them and wrote books for them (2) concerning the Imamate.”
The second point:
It may be said: These doctrines that he has reported are not known to have been held by anyone recognized as following the school of [the adherents of] (3) the Sunnah and the Community: [nor] (4) by any of the leading authorities (5)
(1) (B), (A), and (ʿ) read: “Abū al-Akhwas Dāwūd ibn Rāshid al-Basrī”; (N) and (M) read: “Abū al-Ahwas Dāwūd ibn Asad al-Basrī”; *al-Maqālāt* reads: “Abū al-Ahwas Dāwūd ibn Rāshid al-Basrī.” Shia biographical dictionaries differ regarding his name, *kunya*, and epithet. Al-Najāshī states in *al-Rijāl*, p. [0–9]20: “Dāwūd ibn Asad ibn Afur, Abū al-Akhwas al-Basrī—may Allah have mercy on him—was an eminent shaykh, jurist, dialectical theologian, and hadith scholar. He was thoroughly trustworthy.” Ibn al-Mutahhar al-Hillī quotes al-Najāshī in his *Rijāl*, p. [0–9]9, except that he gives the name as: “Dāwūd [ibn] Asad ibn Ufayr—with the letter *ayn* vocalized *u*—Abū al-Ahwas al-Basrī.” Al-Tūsī states in *al-Fihrist*, p. [0–9]21: “Abū al-Ahwas al-Misrī was one of the eminent theologians of the Imāmiyya. Al-Hasan ibn Mūsā al-Nawbakhtī met him and studied under him.” Ibn [Shahrāshūb], however, states in *Maālim al-Ulamā*, p. [0–9]39: “Abū al-Ahwas al-Basrī was a dialectical theologian. He met al-Hasan al-Nawbakhtī and studied under him. He authored *Kitāb al-Radd alā al-Uthmāniyya* (*The Refutation of the Uthmāniyya*).” Al-Āmilī mentions some of these discrepancies in *Ayān al-Shīa*, 6/92: “Abū al-Ahwas al-Misrī—or al-Basrī—was named Dāwūd ibn Asad ibn Ufayr—or Afur.” See also Ritter’s annotation on *al-Maqālāt*, 1/63.
(2) (ʿ) reads: *wa-alghā lahum* (“and he omitted [it] for them”); (N) and (M) read: *wa-alqā ilayhim* (“and he conveyed [it] to them”).
(3) “Adherents” appears only in (ʿ).
(4) “Nor” appears only in (ʿ).
(5) (B) and (A) read: “and among the leading authorities.”
