al-Himyarī(1) held that the dead would return, and on this subject he said:
Until a day when people return(2)
To their worldly life before the Reckoning.(3)
He said(4): “Among them is a group(5) who claim that Allah entrusted and delegated all affairs to Muhammad [—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—](6), and that He gave him the power to create the world, so he created and governed it, while Allah created none of it. Many of them say the same about ʿAlī. They also claim that the Imams abrogate revealed laws, that the angels descend upon them, that miraculous signs appear through them, and that they receive revelation.
“Some of them offer greetings of peace to the clouds and, whenever a cloud passes, say, ‘ʿAlī is in it.’(7)
[Regarding them, one of the poets says](8):
I disavow the Khārijites—I am not one of their band—
Including al-Ghazzāl among them and Ibn Bāb.(9)
(1) (B) and (A) read: “al-Sayyid al-Hamrī”; (N) reads: “al-Sayyid al-Khamrī,” which is a corruption. He was Ismāʿīl ibn Muhammad ibn Yazīd ibn Rabīʿa ibn Mufarrigh al-Himyarī, one of the early Rāfidī poets. He was born in 105 AH and died in 173 AH. See his biography in *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 1/436–438; *Fawāt al-Wafayāt*, 1/32–36; *Aʿyān al-Shīʿa*, 12/85–165; *Rawdāt al-Jannāt*, p. [0–9] 9–31; Brockelmann, *Tārīkh al-Adab al-ʿArabī*, 2/68–69; and *al-Aʿlām*, 1/320–321.
(2) (B) and (A) read: “until a day when he leads the people among them,” which is erroneous. The reading printed here is based on (ʿA), (N), and *al-Maqālāt*, 1/86.
(3) (ʿA) reads: “before the Day of Reckoning.”
(4) The words “He said” are absent from (B) and (A). The passage that follows appears in *al-Maqālāt*, 1/86–87.
(5) *Al-Maqālāt*, 1/86, reads: “The fifth group among the categories of the extremist sects.”
(6) The words “may Allah bless him and grant him peace” are absent from (N), (M), and (ʿA).
(7) (ʿA) reads: “Some of them greet the clouds with peace whenever a cloud passes over them, believing that ʿAlī is in it.”
(8) The words in square brackets are absent from (N), and part of them is also absent from (M).
(9) In (N), only three corrupted words of the verse remain. (B), (A), and (ʿA) read: “min al-ʿazzāl minhum wa-Ibn Dāb.” The correct reading is established from *al-Maqālāt*, 1/87, and *al-Farq bayna al-Firaq*, p. [0–9] 1, 144. Al-Ghazzāl is Wāsil ibn ʿAtāʾ, and Ibn Bāb is ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd ibn Bāb.
