everything that arises(1) in their hearts is revelation, and that every believer receives revelation(2).
Al-Ashʿarī said(3): “Some people(4) have held Salmān al-Fārisī to be divine.”
He said:(5) “Among the Sufi ascetics are those who believe in divine indwelling, maintaining that the Creator indwells individual beings, (6 and that He may indwell a human being, a beast of prey, or any other individual being 6)(6). When the adherents of this doctrine see something they find beautiful, they say, ‘We do not
(1) *Al-Maqālāt* reads: “everything that arises.”
(2) The Bazīghiyya were the followers of Bazīgh ibn Mūsā al-Hāʾik (the weaver), himself a follower of Jaʿfar al-Sādiq. Shīʿī biographical works transmit from al-Kashshī a report in which he is cursed together with others. It reads (*Rijāl al-Kashshī*, pp. [0–9]57–258): “Ibn Sinān related: Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him) said, ‘We are a truthful Household, yet we are never without a liar who tells lies about us. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was the most truthful of all creation in speech, yet Musaylima told lies about him.’ Abū ʿAbd Allāh then mentioned al-Hārith al-Shāmī and Banān and said, ‘They used to tell lies about ʿAlī ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him).’ He then mentioned al-Mughīra ibn Saʿīd, Bazīʿ, al-Sarī, Abū al-Khattāb, Maʿmar, Bashshār al-Ashʿarī, Hamza al-Yazīdī, and Sāʾid al-Nahdī, and said, ‘May Allah curse them! We are never without a liar who tells lies about us,’ etc.” Al-ʿĀmilī transmitted this report in *Aʿyān al-Shīʿa*, 13/231–232, likewise naming him “Bazīʿ.” He also transmitted another report about him which states (p. [0–9]58): “Ibn Abī Yaʿfūr related: I visited Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), and he asked, ‘What happened to Bazīʿ?’ I replied, ‘He was killed.’ He said, ‘Praise be to Allah. Nothing is better for these Mughīriyya than being killed, for they never repent.’” Al-ʿĀmilī rejected the identification of this Bazīʿ with either Bazīʿ the muezzin or Bazīʿ, the client of ʿAmr ibn Khālid; al-Tūsī listed both among the transmitters associated with al-Sādiq. See *Rijāl al-Tūsī*, p. [0–9]59. See also, regarding Bazīgh and the Bazīghiyya: *al-Maqālāt*, 1/77–78; *al-Milal wa-l-Nihal*, 1/160; *Usūl al-Dīn*, p. [0–9]95; *al-Farq bayna al-Firaq*, p. [0–9]4 (the annotation states: “Some render the name as ‘Bazīgh,’ with the dotted letter *ghayn*, but the correct form uses the undotted *ʿayn*, namely ‘Bazīʿ’”); and *al-Badʾ wa-l-Taʾrīkh*, 5/130, 130–131.
