[and what is attributed to him under the title “The Esoteric Realities of Quranic Exegesis”(1), much of which was cited by Abū ‘Abd al-Rahmān al-Sulamī](2). These writings became a source of income for members of Sufi orders(3) and their ilk. Some of them even claimed that the work(4) “The Epistles of the Brethren of Purity” was his, although every rational person who understands it and knows Islam(5) knows that it contradicts the religion of Islam.
Moreover, it was composed only about two hundred years(7) after the death of Ja‘far ibn Muhammad(6). Ja‘far ibn Muhammad died in 148 AH, whereas these
(1) Manuscript (B) alone reads *al-Ta'sīr*, an obvious corruption.
(2) The text in brackets is absent from manuscripts (N) and (M). Abū Abd al-Rahmān Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Sulamī was born in 325 AH and died in 412 AH. Al-Dhahabī said: “The shaykh of the Sufis and the author of works on their history, biographical classes, and exegesis. It was said that he fabricated hadiths for the Sufis.” More than one manuscript copy of his book *Haqā'iq al-Tafsīr* survives. See Nūr al-Dīn Shurayba’s introduction to al-Sulamī’s *Tabaqāt al-Sūfiyya* (al-Minyāwī ed., 1372/1953); *Mīzān al-I'tidāl*, 3:46–47; *Tārīkh Baghdād*, 2:248–249; Ibn al-Athīr, *al-Lubāb*, 1:554; *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 5:140–141; *al-A'lām*, 6:330.
(3) Manuscripts (N) and (M) read *makāsib al-turufiyya*, which is a corruption.
(4) Manuscript (N) reads *kānat* (“it was”), while (M) reads *kātaba* (“he corresponded”).
(5) Manuscripts (B) and (A) read “the Muslim.”
(6) Manuscript (B) alone reads: “Ja'far ibn Muhammad, may Allah be pleased with him.”
(7) Manuscripts (B) and (A) read “one hundred years,” which is incorrect.
