Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

for the Messenger, while glorification morning and evening is for Allah alone. Allah Most High says:

“Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, fears Allah, and is mindful of Him—it is they who are triumphant.”

[Surah al-Nūr: 52]

Thus, He made obedience due to Allah and the Messenger, but fear and mindfulness due to Allah alone.

Allah Most High also says:

“If only they had been content with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and had said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us. Allah will give us of His bounty, and so will His Messenger. Indeed, our hope is in Allah.’”

[Surah al-Tawba: 59]

He thus ascribed giving to Allah and the Messenger because what is meant here is giving under the revealed law—namely, what Allah has permitted through the words of His Messenger. This differs from someone whom Allah has granted dominion through creation and decree, but who does not obey Allah and His Messenger in exercising it. Such a person is blameworthy and deserving of punishment, even though Allah granted him that dominion through creation and decree. As for one who is content with what Allah and His Messenger have given him, he is among those content with what Allah and His Messenger have made lawful, and he does not seek what has been forbidden to him, as did those of whom Allah said:

“Among them are those who criticize you concerning the charities: if they are given some of them, they are pleased, but if they are not given any, they immediately become resentful.”

Then He said:

“If only they had been content with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and had said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us.’”

[Surah al-Tawba: 58, 59]

He did not say, “and His Messenger,” because Allah alone is sufficient for His servant, as Allah Most High says:

“Is Allah not sufficient for His servant?”

[Surah al-Zumar: 36]

And He says:

“Those to whom people said, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them.’ But this only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee.’”

[Surah Āl Imrān: 1173]

He then called upon them to say:

“Allah will give us of His bounty, and so will His Messenger.”

[Surah al-Tawba: 59]

He thus stated that the Messenger (would give them) (1), and that this is from Allah’s bounty alone. He did not say, “from His bounty and the bounty of His Messenger.” Then He mentioned their words:

“Indeed, our hope is in Allah.”

[Surah al-Tawba: 59]
