He also said, “The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like a single body: when one limb suffers, the entire body responds with sleeplessness and fever.” If you feel pain in the smallest extremity of your body, that pain travels through the whole frame; the Muslims should be just like that—when any one of them is afflicted, it should be as though the matter has come back to you personally.
Know, too, that giving nasihah—sincere counsel—means speaking to a person privately, just between the two of you. When you advise him in confidence, it penetrates his heart and he recognizes your sincerity. But if you criticise him in front of others, pride may seize him and he may refuse the advice. He might even imagine that you only wish to take revenge on him, rebuke him, or lower his standing among the people, and so he will not accept it. When the advice is delivered privately, however, it carries great weight and value in his eyes. Before all else, we ask Allah to grant all of us success in what He loves and is pleased with.
182 – Second hadith: Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to establish the prayer, pay the zakah, and offer sincere counsel to every Muslim.” Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
