does Satan do to a ruined heart?”
The Jews are disbelievers; their hearts are in ruins, so Satan does not trouble himself to whisper to them during their prayer, for the prayer is null from the very outset. Instead, he whispers to the Muslim whose prayer is sound and accepted, seeking to spoil it. He approaches the believer whose faith is clear in order to corrupt that very clarity. Yet—praise be to Allah—the One who endowed the healer of hearts and bodies, Muhammad ﷺ, has prescribed for us a remedy and a cure. He directed us to seek refuge in Allah and to cut the thought off. Whenever someone senses one of these satanic promptings, let him say, “I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan,” then desist, turn away, pay it no attention, and go on with what he is doing. When Satan sees that he has no way to corrupt that sound, believing heart, he turns on his heels and retreats.
Then, when they said, “We hear and we obey; Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return,” their souls yielded and their tongues humbled. Thereupon Allah revealed:
“The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. All of them believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. They say, ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.’” (Q 2:285)
In this verse Allah, Most High, praises His Messenger ﷺ and the believers because they declared, “We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.”
