the Prophet ﷺ, and disparaging the Lord of all creation—yet they are a people who do not comprehend: “Deaf, dumb, and blind, and therefore they do not understand” (Qur’an 2:171).
As for how it constitutes an affront to the divine law: the very people who transmitted that law to us were the Companions. If they had apostasized, and the law reached us only through them, nothing of it could be accepted, for the report of an unbeliever is inadmissible—and even the statement of an open sinner must be scrutinized. Allah, the Exalted, says: “O you who believe, if a rebellious sinner comes to you with news, verify it” (Qur’an 49:6).
As for its being an affront to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: if the Prophet’s Companions were, as is claimed, steeped in unbelief and sin, then that is an implicit attack on the Messenger himself, for a person is judged by the company he keeps. Everyone is reproached on account of an evil companion; people say, “So-and-so is worthless, for his associates are such-and-such notorious wrongdoers.” Thus, vilifying the Companions is tantamount to vilifying the one they accompanied.
As for its being an affront to Allah, Lord of all creation, this is manifest. It would mean that the best, most universal, and finest of revelations was entrusted to a man whose followers—according to their allegation—were of such caliber, and that the Companions of this Prophet—who is the best of all prophets, blessings and peace upon him—were the very people whom the Rāfiḍah claim turned back on their heels.
For that reason we hold that this is a grievous slander against the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—and a transgression against Allah, His Messenger, and His law. Beyond doubt, we cherish love for every Companion of the Prophet ﷺ and for the believing members of his Household. We maintain that the believing members of his Household possess two rights over us: the right of faith and the right of kinship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Allah the Exalted says: “Say, ‘I ask of you no recompense for it, save affection toward kinfolk’” (Qur’an 42:23)—that is, that you show love
