165 — The Tenth Report: Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us to admonish us and said,
“O people, you will be gathered before Allah barefoot, naked, and ghurlan—uncircumcised—‘Just as We began the first creation, We shall bring it back again; that is a promise binding on Us, and We will assuredly fulfill it.’ (21:104)
Know that the very first of creation to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham, peace be upon him. Know, too, that men from my community will be brought forth and led off toward the left side. I will say, ‘My Lord, my Companions!’ but it will be said, ‘You do not know what they introduced after you.’ I will then say, as the righteous servant said, ‘I was a witness over them while I remained among them …’ up to His words, ‘the Almighty, the All-Wise.’ (5:117-118) Then I will be told, ‘From the moment you left them they never ceased to turn back on their heels.’ ” Agreed upon.
(ghurlan): meaning uncircumcised.
Explanation
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—relates from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once stood among us as a preacher. It was the Prophet’s ﷺ habit—indeed, part of his guidance—to address his Companions with both regular sermons and occasional sermons.
- The regular sermons include the Friday sermon, the two ʿĪd sermons, the rain-seeking sermon, and the eclipse sermon. These are prescribed addresses; whenever their occasion arose he ﷺ would deliver them. On Friday he preached two sermons before the prayer, and on ʿĪd
